Wooldale: A Class Act At
The NPower U11 Championships.
It was a thrilling afternoon for all spectators at the 6 a-side tournament at The Zone on Valentine’s Day. Our Team of Morgan Hobson, Jack Short, Tom Bamford, Archie Binks, Brendan Caselton, Zack Turner, Noah Crozier and Jon Codi Batler put heart and soul into every game and the goals came a plenty!
Noah Crozier opened the scoring with two determined goals against Linthwaite. The opponents claimed a penalty in the last few minutes of the game that saw keeper Morgan dive heroically in the right direction. Final score 2-1 Wooldale!
Wooldale goals flowed in the following game against Littletown with Noah, Tom and Jon Codi all bagging one for the team. Littletown pulled one back but it was not enough to stop the Wooldale victory with a stunning save from Morgan and the supreme defensive skills of Archie and Zack.
Meltham B team took the lead against Wooldale in our third match and the nail-biting battles in our half drew gasps from the crowds and yells of encouragement from team mascot and injured midfielder, Morten. Thanks to some powerful tackles from Zack, Archie and Brendan the ball finally found its way through and Brendan and Zack set the record straight and took Wooldale ahead for our third victory.
The next round pitted us against tournament giants Meltham A, who had cruised through their games with 7-0 and 10-0 score lines in their favour. Jack was not cowed by their reputation and stunned the crowd with the force of his goal. Again some solid defending meant that Meltham only took two goals and their narrow victory was contentious as the referee missed a penalty as their keeper illegally left his box. It was stiff upper lip and no complaining from Wooldale and proud teachers all round!
Match four was against the hotly tipped St. Joseph. Wooldale silenced their supporters with two crackers from Jack assisted nobly by Tom and a beauty from Brendan. Final score 3-1 Wooldale.
The final round would be crucial to get Wooldale into the last four and the semi-finals. Linthwaite B put up a spirited defense but with Morgan relinquishing his gloves to Zack, to impress the supporters with his storms up the pitch and an inspired Archie assist, Wooldale top scorer: Jack put three in the back of the net and made a 4-0 victory that did justice to the fine tackles and runs from Noah and Jon Codi, and some relaxed and confident keeping by Zack.
The semi finals put us up against St. Joseph once more and a confident Wooldale side showed its class with a wonderful hat-trick from Tom, and a belter from Zack. Morgan was cat like in goal, leaping around his area with some saves that reminded his coaches of famous international goal keepers at the top of their game. The final whistle saw Wooldale take a 4 -1 win and a coveted place in the final!
Full credit to our fantastic team the loss to Meltham A in the final was not as clear cut as it sounds: 1-3 with our boys have plenty of great runs on goal and some fantastic defending that denied the Colne Valley team many times over. The disappointment was more than made up for by the heroic way our team congratulated the winners showing great courage and great Wooldale Spirit.
What a special event – a huge thanks to HuddersfieldTown in the Community and our team for a lovely afternoon at the beautiful game.
